Confession and Repentance – Unlocking Freedom Through Humility Confession and Repentance
“Demons thrive on unconfessed sin.” – Bill Subritzky
Before engaging in spiritual warfare or seeking deliverance, confession and repentance are essential second steps. They clear the ground, remove the enemy’s legal rights, and invite the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit. Without true repentance, any attempt at deliverance can be short-lived or ineffective. Deliverance begins not with casting out demons, but by submitting fully to God.
As written in Psalm 139:23–24:
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
This posture of openness invites the Holy Spirit to reveal hidden sins—those we have ignored, forgotten, or justified. Confession brings what is hidden into the light. It breaks secrecy, shame, and demonic footholds.
1.The Power of Confession
When we confess 1 John 1:9 promises:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Confession is the first step to cleansing. Repentance is the next—turning away from sin and walking in a new direction. It involves not just sorrow, but action. As Acts 3:19 urges:
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”
As we confess and renounce sin, we remove the enemy’s legal ground. Without repentance, the door remains open. With it, the enemy is disarmed.
2. A Comprehensive List to Confess and Renounce
Take time to pray, listen, and journal. Allow the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that he highlights athe following areas:
- Personal sins: lying, stealing sexual immorality (lust, pornography, fornication, adultery)
- Bitterness and unforgiveness (resentment, judgment, inner vows)
- Occult involvement (horoscopes, witchcraft, New Age, Freemasonry, spiritism)
- Addictions (alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, media)
- Ancestral sins (generational patterns of idolatry, abuse, bloodshed, perversion)
God’s Word warns that the sins of the fathers can impact future generations (Exodus 20:5–6). But through confession and renunciation, those generational iniquities can be broken.
Prayer of Confession and Repentance
“Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus. I repent of all known and unknown sin in my life and in my bloodline. I ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing by the precious blood of Jesus. I renounce every agreement I’ve made with darkness—whether knowingly or unknowingly—and I receive Your mercy, grace, and freedom. Holy Spirit, fill every place in me that sin has occupied. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Let this process be personal and genuine. Do not rush it. Let Holy Spirit bring things to your mind always remembering that he loves you and ALWAYS has your freedom as his aim. As you confess, God forgives. As you repent, He restores. And as you submit to Him, the enemy loses his grip.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7
